They help to keep these populations, healthy, and in balance. The presence of great egrets suggests that an ecosystem is healthy.
Great egrets were the focus of the nation’s first conservation efforts. They were almost driven to extinction because their plumes were popular to use on ladies hats. These conservation efforts were wildly successful and helped give rise to the National Audubon Society, which adopted the great egret as its symbol.
